New Novel From Tutor Laura Wilkinson

Congratulations to our tutor Laura Wilkinson whose latest book WHAT THE OCEAN KEEPS publishes in eBook and paperback today. 

In the aftermath of World War 1 a free-spirited woman shackled to the man who saved her from destitution begins a passionate affair with a Canadian soldier trapped in a British repatriation camp where Spanish ‘flu runs riot and violence simmers. 

Inspired by the true and largely forgotten events of the Kinmel Park mutiny, WHAT THE OCEAN KEEPS is a heart wrenching love story that weaves a woman’s search for freedom with a soldier’s struggle to return home as the world reels in the aftermath of war and pandemic.

This is Laura’s eighth novel. She has taught on the Creative Writing Programme for several years and also runs the Advanced Writing Workshops.  

The genesis of the novel began when Laura discovered over 100 war graves in a churchyard in Wales, hundreds of miles from the battlefields of the Western Front. “My interest grew when I learned they belonged to North American servicemen and women, and five died during a mutiny,’ she says. “I’ve been fascinated by the Great War and the impact of it on women for many years. Women like my heroine former munitionette Alma. Soon after the Armistice, the newfound freedom many women had enjoyed during the war was being withdrawn. Against this backdrop, I imagined a passionate affair between an independent woman trapped in a relationship of necessity and a war hero promised to his fallen best friend’s sister. And so What The Ocean Keeps was born.”
